In 2010, for every 100 employees who worked for employers covered under Workers' Compensation Boards, there were 1.76 compensated lost-time injuries. To give a Canadian perspective, in 2011 Workers' Compensation Boards across Canada accepted 294,511 claims for lost-time injuries at Canadian workplaces. Some estimates suggest that the costs relating to workplace disability range from 8% to 15% of an organization's payroll. This number jumps to $19 billion per year when indirect costs are also included. Canadian estimates suggest that occupational injury costs the Canadian economy $9.7 billion per year in direct costs (e.g., compensation benefits). The annual cost of these accidents is $US1.25 trillion, which is about 4% of global GDP. Each year an estimated 270 million workplace accidents occur worldwide.
